Green Homes Grant

Rishi Sunak the chancellor recently announced a new incentive for the UK to benefit from a new Government Energy Saving Grant Scheme to improve their homes energy efficiency.

2 Billion pounds worth of vouchers are available and are due to be released to home owners in Sept 2020  –  There is only funding for  600,000 homes across England so we believe they will go very quickly.

Why A Green Homes Scheme?

The aim of the scheme is to help homeowners and promote energy efficiency, but also to help boost the economy during the coronavirus pandemic by creating jobs.

Is The Scheme For All The UK?

The Green Homes Grant applies to England only – Wales / Northern Ireland / Scotland are not included

How will the Energy Savings Grant work?

This Energy Savings Grant scheme will assist eligible homeowners to use the vouchers to help pay for environmentally friendly improvements such as loft, floor and wall insulation or double glazing to replace single glazing.

You’ll have to apply for a voucher which will be issued to homeowners in England in September which can be used towards the cost of energy efficient improvements, which will cover a third of the cost up to £5000.

People on Uk Benefits will receive a grant of up to £10000 and will pay nothing.

How much will the vouchers be worth?

The vouchers will be worth about two-thirds of the cost of the energy efficient improvements, up to a maximum of £5,000 per household.

EXAMPLE  – a measure costing £4,000 will cost you only £1,320, with the Government paying £2,680 via the voucher.

Vouchers for Low Income Households

The Government will cover the full cost of the energy efficient improvements, so you won’t have to pay anything, and the vouchers could be worth up to £10,000 per household.

Only owner-occupied homes or park homes will be eligible.

What will the vouchers cover?

To qualify for a voucher you need to be installing at least one of the following “primary” improvements:

Primary Measures

Insulation  –     Solid Wall – Cavity Wall – Underfloor -Loft – Roof Room Insulation.

Low Carbon / Renewable Heating – Air-source / Ground-source heat pumps – Solar Thermal Systems.

( Note – low carbon heating is subject to you having adequate insulation in your home. )

If you already have these measures installed, you can use the vouchers to install top-ups (Nor replacement) for existing insulation needed to reach recommended levels.

Secondary Measures:

After installing a primary measure, you will be able to use a vouchers to install the following”

  • Draught-proofing
  • Double or triple glazing, or secondary glazing, –  single glazing only
  • Energy efficient doors, – doors installed before 2002.

New Heating controls and insulation

These include

  • Appliance thermostats,
  • Hot water tank thermostats,
  • hot water tank insulation,
  • smart heating controls,
  •  zone controls,
  • delayed-start thermostats and
  •  thermostatic radiator valves.

Note – You can only receive the same amount of funding for secondary measures equal to the amount you have spent for primary measures.

Who Is Eligible For A Voucher

  • owner-occupied homes
  • shared ownership properties
  • Landlords of private
  • Park home owners.

New-build domestic properties and all non-domestic properties, for example commercial premises, DON’T qualify.

How can I apply for a voucher?

Advice and support can be accessed from the Simple Energy Advice service (SEA)

Once the work is agreed, vouchers will start to be issued from “the end of September”.

Will any firm be able to do this – or just specific installers?

Applicants will be offered a list of approved Trustmark or Microgeneration Certification Scheme accredited tradespeople who are registered with the scheme to carry out the work.

  1. We operate and small startup, specialising in a low cost secondary glazing system (windowskins.co.uk) for period properties

When we looked at the schemes design and onerous limitations, we decided not to bother

  2. I have been trying to access a grant for a free boiler, and am on pension credit, along with my wife, and we’ve been told we meet all the criteria to have a free boiler, but never had an answer to our application. I have tried three times, and phoned the people concerned and asked “why no come back?”
There is a silence and then told that post-code isn’t covered!!(NN14 2LP) Why aren’t we told in the first place? I find it most frustrating having to spend time on the internet, then find out weeks later that we cannot be helped! Will we be successful this time, for something the ad tells us is quick and simple. What’s going on? Mr. R.J.Martin.

    1. Hi Mr Martin The freee boiler scheme is only for those who can have underfloor / attic room / cavity wall insulation at the same time as it is a dual measure scheme. If you cannot have these measures you will have to pay a contribution towards the boiler usually around £500.
Your postcode will be fine. Please post your number if You would like me to call you,. THanks Carlo

  3. I have also been told we got the criteria having no downstairs heating or insulation in a damp old cottage, tried the affordable warmth scheme as my neighbor got everything with them, their now trying to say they don’t do our area!! Help my partner has COPD and we both have chronic asthma amongst mental health problems and epilepsy.
